If you’re in the market for a new fishing boat you might be curious about what’s the average length that people buy. There are a bunch of different lengths you can pick from and in this post, I’m going to be talking about the average length of each type of fishing boat and what the ranges are.
The average length of a fishing boat is 18 feet long. Fishing boat lengths will vary depending on the type of boat and the style but the average range length is between 10 and 26 feet long.
Boat | Average Length | Length Range |
---|---|---|
All-Purpose | 18 feet 8 inches | 14-22 feet |
Jet | 21 feet 7 inches | 19-24 feet |
Bass | 18 feet 9 inches | 16-21 feet |
Inshore | 23 feet 3 inches | 19-25 feet |
Pontoon | 21 feet 11 inches | 16-28 feet |
Jon | 14 feet 8 inches | 10-18 feet |
Canoe | 13 feet 7 inches | 11-16 feet |
Kayak | 11 feet 4 inches | 10-12 feet |
Average Length | 18 feet |
The reason you’d want to know the length is probably to see if you can store it. There won’t be anything worse than if you drive home with your brand new boat and it’s a few inches too long to fit in the garage. This post will hopefully answer your questions and give you a better idea of what you can expect.
All-Purpose Boat
An all-purpose boat is something you can use for fishing, skiing, cruising, or pretty much anything else. They normally have a v style hull (looks like a speed boat) and are great for people who want something that can do it all.
The average length of an all-purpose fishing boat is 18 feet 8 inches long. Obviously, it’ll all depend on the model and brand you get but this was the average for some of the more popular boats on the market.
You can normally find these types of boats as short as 14 feet and some of them can reach up to 22 feet. The longer boats are usually more money but it’ll all depend on what you’re going to be using it for. If you’re using it at the lake and only have a few people, a 14 or 15-foot boat should be plenty.
Boat | Length |
---|---|
Crestliner 1850 Sportfish | 18 feet 11 inches |
Lund Crossover XS 1775 | 17 feet 10 inches |
Lund Adventure 1675 | 16 feet 10 inches |
Tracker Targa V-18 | 18 feet 2 inches |
Champion Rage R22 | 22 feet |
Average Length | 18 feet 8 inches |
Jet Boat
A jet boat is usually something you’d use in the river but you could still bring it to the lake and have an awesome afternoon. They could have a v style hull or they could have a flat bottom.
The average length of a jet fishing boat is 21 feet 7 inches long. Again, it’s going to depend on the make and model but the length is usually going to be a bit longer than an all-purpose boat.
You can normally find these types of boats as short as 19 feet and can reach up to 24 feet long. You’re going to need a good amount of space to store one of these and will need a good-sized vehicle.

Kayak
If you have a car or small SUV then you might have to stick with a kayak. It’s actually one of my favorite ways to fish and you can get some pretty cool kayaks with pedals and different types of motors.
The average length of a fishing kayak is 11 feet 4 inches long. You can normally find these types of boats as short as 10 feet but some of them will be around 12 feet long.

Bass Boat
If you’re only going to be using the boat for lake fishing then you might want to get a bass boat. You could still use them for skiing and cruising around but it probably won’t be as comfortable as an all-purpose boat.
The average length of a bass fishing boat is 18 feet 9 inches long. The majority of these boats are around this length but you can find a few that are shorter and a few that are longer.
You can normally find these types of boats as short as 16 feet and can reach up to 21 feet long. The longer boats are usually more expensive but the shorter boats should do the job just fine.

Inshore Boat
This type of boat will be perfect if you’re going to be doing inshore saltwater fishing. It could be inland or it could be offshore in calmer water. They probably wouldn’t be ideal for offshore fishing with big swells but for everything else it should do the job.
The average length of an inshore fishing boat is 23 feet 3 inches long. Other than the bigger offshore boats, these are some of the larger fishing boats you can get.
You can normally find these types of boats as short as 19 feet and as long as 25 feet. They have plenty of room for a group of people and plenty of room to fish off all three sides.

If you’re looking for something comfortable you can take out, have a barbeque, and do some fishing, you might want to consider getting a pontoon boat.
The average length of a pontoon fishing boat is 21 feet 11 inches long. You can normally find these types of boats as short as 16 feet and can reach up to 28 feet long. Even the smaller boats have plenty of room to fish and hang out on.

Jon Boat
These are some of my favorite fishing boats because they’ll fit in the back of the truck and you can pretty much take them anywhere. You can get into any body of water you can drive to and you can drive them into the narrow and shallow sections of water.
The average length of a Jon boat is 14 feet 8 inches long. You can normally find these types of boats as short as 10 feet long and can reach up to 18 feet.

Canoe
If you have a small SUV or truck and can’t tow some of the larger boats, you might want to get yourself a canoe. They can be a little tippy but you can take them pretty much anywhere and you can even put a little electric motor on the back.
The average length of a fishing canoe is 13 feet 7 inches long. You can normally find these types of boats as short as 11 feet and they can reach up to 16 feet long.
